The Problem

Headline HIV/AIDS numbers suggest that Zambia has emerged from the worst of the crisis: the percentage of infected people has fallen from around 25% a few years ago to around 15% in 2007. But millions more will continue to suffer from the fallout of an epidemic that has burned long and deeply. National estimates suggest that:

More than half of all young people who are now 15 years old will eventually die of AIDS.

For any country, and especially one with a population of only 12 million, this is a devastating blow. Already around 100,000 people die from AIDS each year.

Our Response

The government is stepping up efforts to expand life-saving drug treatments and EJAF funding supports progams that make these treatment plans more successful - either by improving the nutrition of people on treatment  or helping them to stick to treatment plans. These initiatives help boost their chance of living longer, healthier lives.

We also continue to champion groups of people living with HIV/AIDS to develop innovative ways of generating adequate nutrition and income for themselves and their families. This disease’s devastating impact does not end with those whose lives it takes: many leave behind children - the number of AIDS orphans is estimated at over 700,000 - and infected spouses. EJAF funding looks to help those left alone, in need or infected by HIV/AIDS.
