THE
FOUNDATION
AT WORK

During the next strategic cycle (2007-2010), EJAF seeks to support the following grant programmes in Uganda for which multi-year funding (up to 3 years) is available:

An EJAF supported nurse visiting the community

An EJAF supported nurse visiting the community

Support for vulnerable children

Particularly internally displaced children, street children and teenagers.  We are seeking community based programmes that, either singly or with partners, are addressing the multiple needs of children infected or affected by HIV/AIDS, including access to healthcare and education, adequate nutrition, shelter, legal and psychosocial support. They should be child centred, show clear measurement of impact at household level and for the child, use effective and appropriate ‘entry levels’ for services, and have a cost effective process of adding beneficiaries to their programme.  They must demonstrate sound working partnerships with health and education sectors, have the capacity to scale and anticipate how the programme will be sustained over the long term.

Addressing the needs of women

We are seeking programmes that aim to decrease the vulnerability of women and girls to HIV/AIDS and to mitigate its impact on them, including:

  • Provision of integrated services that include sexual reproductive health, HIV testing/treatment and prevention of mother-to-child transmission.  Programmes should have the ability to scale and to strengthen local or national provision within the health sector.  They should offer multiple entry levels.
  • Provision of legal/human rights programmes that empower women infected, affected and at risk of HIV/AIDS to make informed choices, protect themselves and exercise their rights at local, regional and national level.
  • Provision of effective and sustainable, food security and income generation programmes, particularly those integrated with HIV treatment and care and that have the ability to scale up.  They must show clear measurement of impact at a household level and for the individual, and anticipate how the programme will be sustained over the longer term.

Support for vulnerable or at risk groups

Particularly refugees/internally displaced persons, asylum seekers, fishing communities and men who have sex with men (MSM).  We are seeking programmes that will increase access to HIV prevention, testing, treatment, care and support services amongst these vulnerable communities.  Priority will be given to those programmes offering access to a decentralised and comprehensive continuum of HIV/AIDS care incorporating different entry points, sustainable nutritional support and strategies for dealing with high levels of TB & Malaria co-infection.

Organisations/Networks of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA)

We are seeking organisations and networks which empower PLWHA, enabling them to play a key role in the development of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment services (particularly support to serodiscordant couples), improve their quality of life and exercise self-determination.  Programmes must demonstrate impact at an organisational and beneficiary level, and anticipate how the programme will be sustained over the long term.

Small Grants Fund

EJAF also operates a Small Grants Fund (up to £6,000) open to pilot projects and local CBOs working on HIV/AIDS programmes in the above areas or with marginalised/vulnerable communities.

NB All programmes will need to ensure that beneficiaries are central to the design and implementation of the programme and be able to demonstrate their impact on the beneficiary group.
