The Problem
Cambodia's turbulent recent history of war, genocide and secrecy helped HIV/AIDS thrive, giving Cambodia the highest HIV rate in Asia. Concerted prevention efforts by the government over the past decade, particularly a '100% condom' campaign amongst female sex workers, has helped to halve the number of new infections.
However, most of those already infected with HIV live with daily stigma and deprivation, with only a few able to access antiretroviral therapy. Condom use within marriage is virtually non-existent, and treatment to prevent mothers transmitting the disease to their unborn children (PMTCT) is rare. In addition the AIDS death toll has already created a large number of orphans.
Our Response
EJAF has supported the development of the leading programme in Cambodia for AIDS orphans, which aims to mitigate the devastating impact of the epidemic on their health, education and well-being as well as strengthen the ability of their families and communities to support them over the long term. This will continue to be a major area for support.
We are also focusing on providing information, testing and treatment for women, particularly married women, and will support programmes working with severely marginalised groups who do not normally access mainstream services because of deep rooted stigma, such as men who have sex with men.
